Zombie Deer Virus; Middle East is Safe But Medical Professionals Cautioned the Risk of Infection in Human

With the rise of reported cases of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), commonly referred to as the 'zombie deer virus,' in the United States, Canada, and northern Europe, doctors in the UAE are urging people to be cautious of the possibility of animal-to-human transmission.

Although the 'zombie deer virus,'  has not been reported in the Middle East, medical experts in the UAE stress the significance of taking preventive measures, as the instances of the disease continue to rise globally.

The Zombie Deer Disease (Chronic Wasting Disease-CWD) predominantly impacts animals like deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer, and moose, causing neurological signs, cognitive impairment, behavioural modifications, and ultimately, death. Affected animals may display peculiar behaviours, such as stumbling, loss of weight, and aggression. Dr Mohamed Ahmed El Maghawri Shanab, an Internal Medicine expert at Burjeel Royal Hospital in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, emphasized that the communicable disease spreads among cervids through direct or indirect exposure to bodily fluids or contaminated surroundings.
